The cast of Firefly put a lot of thought into the future of their characters

The cast of "Firefly" reunited for the Science Channel's 10-year special "Firefly: Browncoats Unite" and one of the main talking points was what happened to the cast by Serenity. According to Morena Baccarin, who played Inara Serra, a companion living on the ship, her character had a checkered past and harbored a "deep and dark secret". Writer/director/executive producer Tim Minear revealed that Inara's secret was that she was terminally ill. It's not the only dark plan that was in the works for Inara, though it makes sense, considering what she says to the ship's resident doctor, Simon Tam (Sean Maher), in "Out of Gas." . After telling him he didn't want to die on Serenity, Inara replies, "I don't want to die at all." Baccarin also said that Inara isn't the only one with a secret, and that the writers have a roadmap of where the whole crew is headed.

When asked what would happen to his mercenary Jayne Cobb, Adam Baldwin replied, "I floated the idea that he might be able to get his own ship and compete a bit with Mal, and that he would fail miserably and have to come back, humiliated." Well, that certainly sounds like Jayne. As for Nathan Fillion's Captain Malcolm "Mal" Reynolds, the actor didn't mention any specific ideas, but felt the character would have become "more bitter and grumpy." Let's hope not. I'd like to think that Mal has finally found his way to happiness. Sure, being bitter was a bit of his thing, but Fillion made Mal so likeable that you couldn't help but support him.
