Four Arsenal players need an upgrade (because we couldn't think of five)

What quickly became apparent as we tried to find five players Arsenal needed to improve - as we have done with other clubs - is that almost all Arsenal players play well, which makes any choice moot, and we are sure to provoke anger in some cases.

There are a lot more players that Mikel Arteta can build around (basically all of them), but we tried to pick our top five, which was a lot easier than that.

They obviously didn't need to be upgraded, but more than the others, and we ended up not getting five.

Ben WhiteBen White plays just as well at right-back as Ben White can play at right-back. And because Ben White plays well and plays at right-back, it doesn't take a big leap for people to suggest that Ben White is a great right-back. But Ben White is not a right-back and therefore not a great right-back.

He had some great games and produced some great moments of skill, but he's a weak link. And it's not because he's terrible, but because the rest of the team is so good and looks so comfortable. All the other players in the starting XI seem made for their position. Not Ben White. Because it is not.

Granit Xhaka If you hadn't already sensed our desperation trying to select players in need of an upgrade, now it will be apparent. Granit Xhaka has been shining for over a year now, in the rather extraordinary turnaround of a player flipping the bird and telling fans to "f*** off" three years ago.

Loaded with more attacking responsibilities, he thrived under Arteta and managed to retain Fabio Vieira, who many believed would play more frequently in Xhaka's place following his €35m transfer from Porto.

But if Arsenal are to become the best team in Europe, which must be the goal, is there a place for Granit Xhaka in this team? A Declan Rice decision suggests Arteta agrees.

Rob HoldingWe were forced to think of an ideal world for Arsenal in order to choose Holding. He is an experienced centre-back, useful in the dressing room for that experience as well as his exceptional character and attitude, which was on display in the All or Nothing documentary and which shines through whenever he has the opportunity to talk to the media. /p>

He would also have been a more salable choice if we had written this article last week, at which time he was Arsenal's fourth centre-back behind White, William Saliba and Gabriel Magalhaes, as opposed to now, with a signature of 25 million euros. Jakub Kiwior is probably ahead of him in the pecking order.

Holding is probably more useful to Arsenal when not playing, making him a great fifth-choice option. We may have managed to talk ourselves out of this one.

Reiss NelsonBizarre that Arsenal's most prolific player in the Premier League needs an upgrade. Also quite odd that a player who got two goals and an assist in his only start this season only played a minute longer. But then he was injured for a long time.

Because it's now seemingly impossible for Arsenal players not to play well, Nelson probably would have scored a few more goals had he had more opportunities.

But even in his Man of the Match display against Nottingham Forest, you didn't think Nelson would push for a starting spot, and his career so far suggests Arsenal could now operate at a higher level than him.
