Hundreds of school buildings across the UK are due for refurbishment as part of a government-funded program to improve facilities for pupils over the next decade.

The latest batch of 239 schools has been announced as part of the school reconstruction program, which will retrofit buildings to make them more energy efficient.

Classrooms, sports halls and dining halls are among the buildings that will be upgraded and replaced under the program over the next ten years.

This announcement brings the number of projects identified under the program to 400, with previous announcements made in three tranches from February 2021 to July this year.

A hundred more schools due for makeovers are expected to be announced in due course.

It was not clear how much money had been allocated to the entire project.

The Department of Education plans to rejuvenate 500 schools over a decade, but it was revealed in July that 1,105 schools had applied for the scheme over a four-week application window at the start of 2022.

The limitations of the project meant that more than half - 54.8% - of applicants would be absent, according to a July report.

This comes after the DfE previously admitted that £11.4 billion in repairs were needed across England.

Schools considered to be in the worst condition with buildings in need of urgent replacement are prioritized in the school reconstruction program.

Security risks have been assessed by the government and schools likely to cause significant harm to students and/or staff have been prioritized.
