Harvey Weinstein jury deliberates for second week without verdict

Now in its second week of deliberations, the jury in the Harvey Weinstein trial has yet to render its verdict.

The jury began deliberating on December 2. When the members of the jury left the courthouse on Monday, they were approaching nearly 30 hours of deliberations. They are due back Tuesday at 9:30 a.m.

The 12-person jury is made up of eight men and four women. Jurors are tasked with reviewing a large amount of evidence, including testimony from 50 witnesses. With the selection of the jury, the trial stretched out over two months.

Weinstein faces seven counts from four accusers, including five counts of sexual assault and two counts of rape. The jurors must be unanimous to rule on each count.

The jury did not submit any questions or notes to the judge — at least, in the presence of the media — so there is no indication of what the jury might be focusing on or what it might be stuck on.

Last week, one of the six alternate jurors asked to be excused from the case, invoking a vacation that was scheduled for that week. After the defense objected, the judge refused to excuse the substitute juror.

If convicted, Weinstein could face up to 60 years to life in prison, in addition to the 23-year sentence he is already serving as part of his 2020 New York sentencing. The former Hollywood titan was extradited to Los Angeles in 2021 and has been held in a medical unit at the Twin ever since. Towers Correctional Facility.
