Have more fun together and stay together

Most people seem to lose the fun of their relationship or marriage after years together…

But some couples never lose the fun.

They seem to continue to have fun together, enjoy being together, and maintain the spark and romance year after year. They make their love grow.

What's the difference?

Part of the reason is spontaneity and curiosity. They allow themselves to be spontaneous and open to new interests and adventures. A second reason is that one or both people in the relationship simply “decide” that they are going to have fun – no matter what life throws at them…and they do. A third way for couples to have more fun together is to not take each other too seriously and have what we call "love connectors."

We're talking about the fun a couple (or even friends or co-workers) can have together when they stop taking themselves seriously and take their life seriously, find humor in their humanity, and find more fun in times that "shouldn't" be so fun (but they are.)

Like when Otto's Uncle Edgar died.

Before you think we've lost our minds here talking about having more fun at poor Uncle Edgar's expense...

No, we didn't think it was funny that Otto's Uncle Edgar died, but what he was buried in was another story.

It was 1980. Otto was 18 and had just gotten his first real job selling radio advertising at a small "top 40" radio station about 30 miles from the town where he grew up. in southern Ohio.

Looking back now, Otto recalls being horrible at selling publicity when he was first sent out to talk to business owners three times his age about promoting their company on this new station.

But, perhaps uglier than his sales efforts at the time, were the clothes Otto wore to go on those sales calls.

Just imagine the loudest, shiniest, ugliest sports shirts and coats you could find and these are the clothes Otto would wear to talk to very conservative and much older business owners .

After a while, Otto finally realized and understood that if he had any hope of succeeding in this new career, he would have to get rid of all those loud and ugly clothes.

He did.

Life happened, the years passed, and Otto had almost forgotten those "noisy" sports coats until about 30 years later, when he went to pay his last respects to Uncle Edgar who had just die.

The evening of the visitation at the funeral home, Otto walked through the front door, greeted his family and friends, and headed to the front of the room to see his uncle one last time.

When he got close enough to see Uncle Edgar lying in the coffin, he started laughing hysterically and kept laughing so hard he had to temporarily excuse himself and take some air outside.

He called Susie so she could share the absurdity of the situation.

What was so funny you might ask?

Uncle Edgar lay there, dead, in one of the very loud, green, Scottish sports coats that Otto wore so proudly.

Where and how did Uncle Edgar get that old sports coat from Otto that he would eventually be buried in?

This is one of life's great mysteries to us because Otto hadn't seen this particular sports coat in over 30 years and had no idea what had happened to it.

What we do know is that seeing Uncle Edgar lying there dead in that awful sports coat is one of the funniest moments of our lives.

It's something that makes us laugh out loud every time we think about it and it's something that's a shared experience that we think will never stop being funny.

Other people may not think it's funny, but it is to us and that's the point.

To bring more fun into your relationship and your life, just decide to do it and be open to laughing more.

If you're like us, once you decide you want more fun in your relationship and your life and start looking, you'll start finding your own jokes and stories that only mean something to you. and the people in your life.

These can be things that will make you smile during the high points of your life and things that will help you deal with difficult times more easily.
