Heathrow airport workers were voting on whether to strike following a dispute over an offer of a pay rise by the airport - which the Unite union says is actually a pay cut due to inflation

Thousands of Heathrow Airport workers will leave over the Easter holidays due to a dispute over pay and conditions.

More than 3,000 Unite workers at the west London travel hub have been on strike since February 17, and the decision to strike the picket line was handed down this afternoon.

Security guards, engineers and firefighters who rejected a 10% pay rise were to step down.

And today Unite confirmed that more than 1,400 of its members employed by Heathrow Airports Ltd (HAL) will take a 10-day strike from March 31 after voting in favor of the walkouts.

The strike involves security guards employed at Terminal 5, the union said.

The union says the proposed pay rise is actually a pay cut, with the actual inflation rate currently standing at 13.4%.

Unite General Secretary Sharon Graham said: 'Heathrow Airport is guilty of blatant hypocrisy, it is paying phone number salaries to its chief executive and senior staff, but the workers who make the company successful receive poverty wages.
