This summer has been the hottest on record in Europe, according to satellite monitoring data of the EU.

A series of extreme heat waves and a long-lasting drought led to the months of June, July and August crossing the previous record temperature of 0.7° Fahrenheit (0.4° Celsius).

The Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S) said temperatures on the mainland had been the "highest on record for the month of August and summer (June-August) as a whole".

Data showed August was the hottest on record in Europe by a "substantial margin", beating the previous record set in August 2018 by 1.4° Fahrenheit (0.8° Celsius).
