A collective burial site containing 440 graves has been discovered in a liberated Ukrainian town.

Hundreds of dead were discovered in Izyum, in the Kharkiv region of the country, after it was liberated from Russian control.

A senior police officer disclosed the horrific find and said each body would be exhumed and taken for forensic examination.

This was all part of a major Ukrainian effort, with police working with prosecutors and other investigators, to gather evidence of alleged Russian war crimes.

Chief police investigator Serhii Bolvinov said each body was buried individually at the makeshift site.

However, to compound the shocking discovery, officers would also be aware of a number of other burial sites.
