A man has been mauled to death by his own dogs who mistakenly believed he was an intruder, after a series of attacks around the world.

John Gavhera, 61, allegedly forgot the keys to his gate and jumped into his garden.

His sudden presence would have alerted his three boerboel dogs who attacked him, biting him all over his body.

His neighbors heard the noise and tried to help him, but had to stay out of the garden lest they too be bitten.

The incident happened earlier this year in Zimbabwe ahead of a series of vicious dog attacks around the world.

A memo from the police read: "The deceased jumped over the gate as he forgot the keys to the gate and since no one was home he entered the house to retrieve his toolbox .

"In no time at all, the deceased was then heard scolding his dog by a student standing nearby,

"The neighbors then saw through the prefabricated wall the deceased lying on the ground while three Boer bulldogs bit him all over his body, dragged him and tore his clothes."

The note added that a torn suit and a telephone were also found in the garden.
