Punters can get decent odds for Liz Truss to have the shortest reign of any Tory prime minister in the last 50 years.

This unfortunate distinction is currently held by Theresa May. But betting firm William Hill puts Ms Truss at 4/6 to spend even less time in office than the former Home Secretary's span of just over three years.

William Hill said he hadn't ruled out that Truss had the shortest term in British political history, putting it 50/1 for not reaching George Canning's 119 days in office.

The 47-year-old is expected to serve until Wednesday, January 4, 2023 to beat the short term of the 19th century prime minister.
