Former Cabinet Minister Simon Clarke was one of Liz Truss' main cheerleaders.

He served by his side when his disastrous economic policies brought down the economy.

But today Mr. Clarke had the nerve to tell nurses who rely on food banks that they need to “up their budget and take responsibility”.

If this Tory MP spent less time hurling insults and more time thinking before he opened his mouth, he might have realized that it was his government's irresponsible budget that emptied the treasury of resources that could have funded our public services.

He may also have realized that nurses have been forced to take industrial action because their average salary has fallen 8% in real terms since 2010, leaving them unable to afford basic necessities like heat and feed.

His dismissive attitude is typical of a party that has not appreciated the NHS and its staff.

In contrast, a terminal cancer patient joined the picket line to show her support for the striking nurses. Patients understand how hard nurses work and why they need a raise.

It's time for the Conservatives to do the same.
