How Mike Judge brought Beavis and Butt-Head into the modern era

The judge said the same thing. Making a "new" Beavis and Butt-Head wasn't so much a problem as seeing their perspective on the world in 2011 - and again in 2022 :

"I don't think of it as changing Beavis and Butt-Head the characters themselves, how they are in the new world, other than just putting the new world around them and letting them react.

The main challenge had little to do with a new audience or even a shifting generation entertainment philosophy. What Judge struggled with was writing "dumb" characters to be fresh and funny. Beavis and Butt-Head certainly follow a tradition that includes the Three Stooges and other "dumb" characters. In order to get it right, Judge did some research on his classics:

"It's harder than it looks to write Beavis and Butt-Head because they're so stupid. They can't figure things out. Somehow things have to happen to them. J 've watched a lot of Clouseau and Cheech and Chong movies and it's all really well done. Like I said, it's harder to write than you might think, but I think I'm pretty happy with the way which we brought them into the future."

The fundamental rule had everything to do with humor. If it was funny, then everything else didn't matter. Beavis and Butt-Head may have been invented in the mind of a young man from New Mexico wanting to recreate the craziness of kids in his age group, but the comic underpinnings of the characters remain: "I think it it's just finding what's pure and funny about them," Judge said, "and without much effort."

"Beavis and Butt-Head Do the Universe" is currently streaming on Paramount+.
