Hugh Jackman and Laura Dern in Florian Zeller's 'The Son' trailer

The Son Trailer

"She wants to pit us against each other." Sony Pictures Classics has unveiled the first official trailer for the indie film The Son, the highly anticipated sequel from the Oscar-winning film The Father by French filmmaker Florian Zeller. He did this after all the praise from Anthony Hopkins, though it's not related to that movie despite having a similar title. A few years after his parents' divorce, 17-year-old Nicholas no longer thinks he can stay with his mother. He moves in with his father Peter and his new girlfriend. Juggling his job, his and Beth's new baby, and the offer of his dream job, Peter tries to care for Nicholas the way he would have liked his own father to care for him. But in looking to the past to correct his mistakes, he loses sight of how to keep Nicolas in the present. With Hugh Jackman, Laura Dern, Vanessa Kirby, Zen McGrath, Hugh Quarshie, also with Anthony Hopkins. It looks wonderful so far, and with barely 60 seconds of footage. I'm really looking forward to watching this movie and I think audiences will be very interested this fall.

Here is Florian Zeller's first The Son trailer, straight from Jackman's Twitter:

The Son Film

A drama that follows a family as they struggle to reunite after falling apart. The Son centers on Peter, whose hectic life with his baby and new partner Beth is turned upside down when his ex-wife Kate appears with their now-teenage son Nicholas. The young man has been absent from school for months and is confused, distant and angry. Peter struggles to care for Nicholas the way he would have liked his own father to care for him while juggling work, his and Beth's new son, and the offer of his dream job in Washington. However, in searching the past to correct his mistakes, he loses sight of how to hold Nicholas in the present. The Son is directed by award-winning French filmmaker Florian Zeller, his second feature film after having directed The Father previously, as well as writing/directing many other plays. The screenplay is written by Christopher Hampton and Florian Zeller, based on Florian Zeller's original play. It premieres at the 2022 Venice Film Festival this month. Sony Classics opens The Son by Zeller in select US theaters from November 11, 2022 this fall. First impression? Do you look good?
