I'm a former flight attendant and here's why the fear of accidentally activating an emergency slide gives cabin crew NIGHTMARES (particularly because they open with enough force to kill someone)

Emergency slides are being fitted to planes to save lives - but they're deploying with it such a force that they could carry one.

That fact is never lost on cabin crew, with the former flight attendant Jay Roberts revealing to MailOnline Travel that the accidental activation of an emergency slide 'is a mistake flight attendants and airport staff around the world fear, causing so much anxiety we have nightmares".

Jay, who worked as a senior cabin crew for Emirates and runs the popular network Fly Guy's Cabin Crew Lounge, said: "Even with multiple checks and balances involving more than one person to ensure slides don't accidentally open, incidents always happen, and in major airlines they happen several times a year and cost dozens of thousands of dollars to the airlines to repack. Besides being costly and causing a lot of embarrassment among co-workers, being known as that crew who "blew up a slide", the error poses a real safety hazard.

"No matter its size, an aircraft must be able to be evacuated in 90 seconds or less. Every second counts, which is why emergency slides deploy with enough pressure to fully inflate in seconds.

'This force can deal a mortal blow to anyone who stands in its way and does not expect its deployment.
