Photographer captures the incredible moment a great white shark jumped out of the water during a surfing competition.

Jordan Anast rarely queues to enter San Onofre beach, always choosing to leave if the parking lot is full, but when competing in the San Onofre Surfing Club on Saturday, he decided to wait.

He now says the reason he felt pushed was to get an amazing shot of a shark piercing.

'I never waited before, but for some reason [I] chose to, I guess this photo was the reason .'

In an incredible snap, Anast captured local surfboard maker Tyler Warren riding the bright blue waves with a long, lean shark riding in arrow behind him.

In a series of photos that look almost unreal - uneven to the photographer himself - the shark can be seen in the shape of a half moon as he goes back into the water.

Warren reportedly told Anast later that he didn't even know the shark had come up behind it, let alone that it was a rare moment.
