An Indian comedian's journey from prison to reality TV stardom

Three years later, the 32-year-old won the popular reality show, taking home a whopping sum of 5 million rupees ($60,160; 47 £455).

On Monday, crowds of people gathered in the Dongri area, a Muslim ghetto just outside the city of Mumbai , to welcome him, a sort of reception usually reserved for movie stars. His name has been trending all week and social media is full of his memorable lines from the show.

But not everyone is happy. An anchor of a popular Hindi television channel said it was "worrying, distressing and disastrous".
