Rishi Sunak and his wife ditched George Osborne's "very tired" furniture in favor of plush curtains and jewel-toned sofas for their Downing Street flat.

The couple opted to use flat No 10 where they lived when Mr Sunak was Chancellor, rather than moving to the larger flat above No 11, used by prime ministers since 1997 .

But Mr Sunak, his heiress wife Akshata Murty and their daughters Krishna, 11, and Anoushka, 9, will live in 'much less pomp' than Boris Johnson's family as they seek to move Downing Street since the “court of Carrie” era, according to a profile in the society bible

The Sunaks funded the renovation themselves, unlike the row sparked by Mr Johnson's attempts to charge a Tory donor for a lavish renovation of his home.

The couple ranked 222nd on the Sunday Times Rich List of the UK's richest people, with an estimated personal fortune of £730million.

Ms. Murty is the daughter of tech billionaire NR Naranya Murty, founder of Infosys and one of India's richest men.

She was at the center of a political storm earlier this year when it emerged she had 'non-dom' status, meaning she didn't have to pay UK tax on income abroad.

Following the backlash, she said she would pay UK tax on all overseas income with immediate effect and backdated to the last tax year.

The Sunaks own four properties, including a mews house in upmarket Kensington, west London, a Grade II listed mansion in the Premier's constituency of North Yorkshire and a flat in Santa Monica, in California.
