Inside Tory meltdown as MPs openly talk 'regime change' against Liz Truss

Even when their careers take off, Conservative prime ministers can usually count on one thing.

Their MPs are showing unity in the face of starving journalists by knocking on the offices of Parliament.

During the Wednesday evening meeting of the 1922 Committee, the deputies banged their desks.

But there was a big problem.

Many of them weren't doing it for Liz Truss - but for the Tory MPs who were going after her, two sources told the Mirror.

Ms Truss has pleaded with MPs to defend her mini budget after it promised deep tax cuts funded by borrowing, creating a £60billion black hole.

But she was bombarded with "machine gun fire" by backbench MPs who don't usually attack, a witness said.

One, Rob Halfon, warned that she had trashed 10 years of blue-collar conservatism.

Another, James Cartlidge, raised questions about how people could pay their mortgages. The deputies supported him.

The anger only mounted when she seemed 'surprised' at the extent of her MPs' desperation, a witness said.

"It was worse than anything I've seen, including under Theresa May," said another witness.

A flood of MPs over the past 36 hours have come forward to express their leader's utter despair - only 37 days since she took office.

A former cabinet minister told the Mirror that 'regime change' could happen if things don't improve soon.

A second former cabinet minister told us: 'Something has to happen. This cannot go on any longer.

"Is this a policy change or a personnel change, I don't know yet."
