A trio of Ampneys grew up here on the edge of the Cotswolds - three honey-coloured villages named after the babbling brook that runs alongside this pub with rooms.

And Wild Thyme & Honey, at Ampney Crucis, takes full advantage of the setting.

There may be a busy road on one side, but on the other, see-through dining pods overlook the water, as do most of the 24 bedrooms.

They all have cool contemporary Cotswold bags, with lots of exposed stonework, rustic wooden furniture and woolen throws .

Beds have oversized felt headboards and there are concrete pendant lights reminiscent of cowbells.

The piece de resistance in all 12 suites is an en-suite bathroom, and in addition to Bramley products, you get a crime novel set in the area and a complimentary carafe of sloe gin to sip while you soak.

For a more sober drink, fresh milk comes with tea bags and more toiletries in the pantry.
