James Cameron: Avatar 2 is profitable, more sequels to come

James Cameron has said many times that he doesn't think he can make more Avatar movies if Avatar: The Way of the Water isn't a financial success. However, after an incredible first few weeks at the box office, Cameron now says it looks like more movies will be on the way.

During a recent episode of Who's Talking to Chris Wallace? from HBO, which starred the director (via The Hollywood Reporter), Cameron opened up about how the Avatar sequel has already grossed over $1.5 billion at the box office. The filmmaker jokingly said that since the movie has now officially broken even, he guesses he'll have to make more movies after all.

“It looks like with the momentum the movie has now, it will easily get through our hiatus even in the next few days, so it looks like I can't get away with it, I'm going to have to do this some other sequels," Cameron said. "I know what I'm going to be doing in the next six or seven years. The thing is, we're doing well. coming for Avatar 3, which is already in the box - we've already captured and photographed the entire film, so we're in extended post-production to do all that CG magic. And then Avatar 4 and 5 are both written. We even have 4 in the box. We started a franchise at this point. We started a saga that can now span multiple films."

Luckily for Cameron, it looks like a lot of work for future Avatar entries has already been done. The director recently spoke about his goals with the franchise and how the story will continue to develop.

"We will also explore new universes while continuing the story of the main characters. I can say that the last parts will be the best. The others were an introduction, a way of setting the table before serving the meal. »

Avatar 3 is tentatively scheduled for December 20, 2024. Other sequels also have release dates, with Avatar 4 scheduled for December 18, 2026 and Avatar 5 for December 22, 2028.
