Just across Carlingford Lough, the boulders of the Morne Mountains tower over the spit of land what is the Cooley Peninsula in County Louth.

This is where President Joe Biden will visit today in honor of his Irish ancestors, the Finnegans, and with a big Gaelic nod to the electorate at home now that he has let slip his likely bid for a second term.

Just five miles from the village of Carlingford, within sight of the ever restless Irish sea, is Lily Finnegan's pub. The President may very well stand in front of this comfortable whitewashed building and contemplate the gaunt harshness of Slieve Foye, the highest peak in the Cooley Mountains.

He probably won't have time to hike the hills, but if he does, they're easy to get to. Carlingford's main street leads directly to a mountainside track that many have used before - hunters, shepherds, rebels, soldiers, smugglers. All walked the trail through gorse and ferns, past wild horses grazing the sparse grass.

Carlingford, on the other hand, is great for relax. It is just 10km southwest of the Northern Irish border, a short drive from Belfast (80km north) or Dublin (110km south). Plan a few days to soak up the food, culture, music and Guinness.
