Johnny Marr on music, memories and how Manchester made it

Johnny Marr has long been known as one of the greatest guitarists music, working hand in hand with singers in groups like The Smiths, Electronic, The The, Modest Mouse, The Cribs, The Pretenders and many others.

But over the past decade, his solo albums have seen him merge these two roles and fully embrace the mantle of leader.

Forward two reunion concerts leading the Johnny Marr Orchestra at Manchester's Factory International, he said this decision was never about taking his turn "being a solo star", but was instead driven by his own desires creative.

"When I first formed the band I had the idea that at least we would play in art galleries , which I still think is a really good idea," he said.

"So this one-man band has always been super idealistic. It was all about artistic concepts."

However, he admitted that he was also motivated by the need he had throughout his career to tap into the musical heart of Manchester. .

"I got to a place in my life where I could have a band that lived in different countries, but the romantic in me told me to form a band in Manchester," he said.
