Keir Starmer pledges to ease Britons' money worries with council tax freeze

Keir Starmer has vowed to focus 'relentlessly' on improving lives today, accusing the Tories of making Britons foot the bill for their slumped economy.

Writing for the Sunday Mirror, the Labor leader expressed 'frustration' with Rishi Sunak who he said had failed 'to allay the concern felt by millions of households when their bill housing tax lands on the doorstep".

Mr Starmer's party today revealed that of the 25 lowest council tax areas in the country, 22 are Labour-controlled.

None of the 25 highest council tax areas is Labour-led; nine of them are led by curators.

Labour said this week they would freeze council tax this year if in power, funding the policy with funds from a windfall tax on oil and gas companies.

Local taxes across the country are expected to rise an average of 5.1% in April.

The average bill will exceed £2,000 for the first time in 2023-24, an increase of £99 on the previous year, according to government figures released last week.

But according to Labor analysis of government figures, Labor-controlled councils charge £345 less in council tax than Conservative councils.

The average tax bill for a Labor majority council is £1,385, compared to £1,730 on a Conservative majority council.

Mr. Starmer urged the Prime Minister to "urgently" raise taxes on energy companies and follow through with their council tax freeze plan.
