Jeremy Hunt admitted 'mistakes were made' by Prime Minister Liz Truss on the disastrous mini-budget in his first interview since taking over as chancellor - and hinted at more conservative U-turns to come.

The former leadership candidate was parachuted in to replace the sacked Kwasi Kwarteng – who believes Liz Truss is next for the chop – in Number 11 on Friday after another day of embarrassment for the Conservative Party.

Speaking to Sky News on Saturday morning as he embarked on his first full day in his new role, Mr Hunt admitted mistakes had been made and warned that 'tough decisions' lay ahead.< /p>

He also said public spending could be increased despite assurances from the Prime Minister two days ago that this would not happen.

Mr. Hunt said: "There have been mistakes. It was a mistake as we are going to ask for tough tax and spending decisions at all levels to reduce the tax rate paid by the wealthiest.

"It was a mistake to fly blind and make these forecasts without giving people the confidence of the Office of Budget Responsibility by saying that the amounts add up.

"The prime minister has acknowledged that, which is why I'm here."
