A vicious pit bull who mauled his owner to death has received several adoption offers.

The dog killed its 82-year-old owner on July 12, but many have come to the animal's defense and claimed it was a freak accident.

The incident happened in Kaiserbagh, India, with the dog currently under observation for 14 days.

Reports indicate that the elderly owner, Sushila Tripathi, a retired teacher, lived at the home with her 25-year-old son and two dogs, a pit bull and a Labrador.

She was home alone during the incident and was found seriously injured by her son after returning from the gym.

Up to eight people, plus a non-governmental organization, approached the local governing body and asked to adopt the pet, saying the dog should not be blamed for the attack.

"We have received several offers from across the country for dog adoption," said Lucknow Municipal Corporation (LMC) Chief Veterinarian Abhinav Verma.

"We put him under observation for 14 days and we will make a final decision after that."

Amit Jani, 39, is one of the hopeful adoption candidates and said: "When I heard about the Kaiserbagh incident, I was shocked, but people calling the dog vicious, I decided to adopt him.

"I already have a pit bull and he never shows aggression. I think such an incident can happen with any breeder if proper care is not taken."

Sujaat Suvarna, 59, agreed, adding, "It was an unfortunate incident, but this voiceless animal cannot be blamed alone."
