North Korea has warned the United States and South Korea of ​​"unprecedented" security concerns and "undesirable" consequences, after the two allies announced the extension of summer joint military exercises.

What happened: Kim Jong-Un's isolated nation said US-South Korean military drills were "bringing the Korean peninsula to the brink of war".

"If the United States and its allies opted for a military confrontation with us, they would face unprecedented security instability," said Choe Jin, deputy director from the North Korean Institute for Disarmament and Security. Peace, a public organization run by the DPRK's Foreign Ministry, according to the AP.

"The United States must keep in mind that it will be treated equally when threatening us with nuclear weapons," Jin added.

Jin further warned that the United States should end its "suicidal policy of hostility" with North Korea if it does not wish to face "an undesirable consequence ".

This came after longtime allies – who regularly conduct joint military exercises – decided to resume joint field exercises for the first time since 2018.

Previously, summer military exercises were reduced due to COVID-19 and in an effort to reduce tensions with North Korea.

Kim's government has consistently condemned joint exercises between the two nations and said military exercises are a precursor to an invasion.
