A senior Labor MP has apologized after calling Scottish First Minister Humza Yousaf 'Mohammed' during a live TV interview.

The Shadow Secretary of State for Northern Ireland Peter Kyle made the mistake during an appearance on Sky News today, while defending Scottish Labor as a 'credible alternative' to the Scottish National Party, led by Mr. Yousaf.

The new Prime Minister took over from Nicola Sturgeon after his sudden resignation in March. Mr Yousaf took the helm just days before Ms Sturgeon's husband, Peter Murrell, was arrested in connection with the police investigation into SNP finances.

Mr. Kyle appeared in an interview with Sky News' Niall Paterson, who asked the MP for Hove whether Mr Yousaf should suspend Ms Sturgeon from the party.

Speaking from Belfast this morning, Mr Kyle said: "What we are trying to do is put in place a credible alternative, an inspiring, hopeful alternative, with credible plans to address the problems of public services in Ireland. northern Scotland, the economy, which is underperforming due to two failing governments that are there to serve the people of northern Scotland.

"These are the things we have tried to come up with an alternative."

He added: "I think Mohammed Yousaf needs to get his party under control because at the moment he is not capable of serving the people of Scotland.

Mr. Kyle has since admitted he was "mortified" by the mistake and apologized to Mr Yousaf.

"I'm always mortified if I ever get someone's name wrong and I am now," he said in a statement. "I'm sorry for Humza and I promise this is a mistake I won't make twice."

The mistake of Mr Kyle has drawn widespread criticism online.
