Underdog in Tory Rishi Sunak leadership race closed the gap on rival Liz Truss, according to a bookmaker.

The former Chancellor's campaign received a slight boost on August 1 after a poll showed much tighter competition than previously thought.

A survey by Italian firm Techne placed Ms Truss, the Foreign Secretary, at 48% among the Tory members against the former Chancellor at 43%, with 9% undecided. chance of winning the race to replace Boris Johnson and secure the keys to No 10 Downing Street.

Tony Kenny, spokesman for William Hill, said: "Rishi Sunak's campaign has received a Much-needed thumbs up lately. Polls suggest things are getting tighter in the Tory leadership race.

"Liz Truss dominated early proceedings and received support from former rival Penny Mordaunt last night but drifted at 2/9 and doesn't look as safe as she once was.

"Sunak, on the other hand, seems to be gaining momentum and seems to have won over some party members, accordingly we have reduced it to 7/2."
