'Long-legged' England were 'terrible' against USA as Neville questions 'interesting' call from Southgate, Foden

Gary Neville, Ian Wright and Gary Neville have all said England are claiming Phil Foden as they draw 0-0 with the United States.

After beating Iran 6-2 on Matchday 1, the Three Lions failed to score against the United States but are still in command to top their group.

At half-time, former England right-back Neville said he hoped to see coach Gareth Southgate bring in Foden.

That didn't happen, with Southgate looking for Jordan Henderson, Marcus Rashford and Jack Grealish to make an impact.

The draw was obviously a disappointing result, but it mirrors the 0-0 draw against Scotland at Euro 2020.

And as you know, England topped their group and reached the final.

"Tournaments are very rarely a bed of roses throughout," Neville said.

"I think Gareth has amazing tournament experience and I think he will recognize that they will come through this group.

"But it was poor. We are all disappointed. We wanted a lot more from England. A clean sheet is a positive and Harry Maguire leads those in the second half and the way they defended.< /p>

"Sometimes our midfield didn't click tonight. We sometimes looked tired, I didn't think we were connecting in combinations in midfield, I thought their midfield (USA ) was much better."

Neville added that the remaining Foden on the bench had 'disappointed' him, and again hailed the 22-year-old's incredible 'talent'

“I was disappointed not to see Foden,” he added. “For me, this talent is huge. I haven't seen anything like it.

"I know we have (Jude) Bellingham, (Jack) Grealish, others. Gareth prefers (Mason) Mount, he prefers (Bukayo) Saka, he prefers (Raheem) Sterling right now.

"Foden not being among them in the starting XI and coming off the bench was interesting."

Neville's ITV and Sky Sports colleague Keane was also 'surprised' to see Foden not being asked by Southgate, and said it was a 'terrible performance'.

He said: "We were surprised to watch him. Gareth will have his reasons, he knows the players better than anyone.

"We were all watching the game expecting Foden. The options and subs that appeared didn't really have an impact; I know they did well the other day.

"England looked on their feet, they looked out of rhythm, they lacked ideas. Even set pieces never felt a goal in their locker because of it. Terrible performance."

And former England striker Wright said the game called for Foden, who could have had its impact against a well-structured USA side.

"It was just because we know Manchester City have to deal with low blocks," Wright said.

"He's someone who is able to find spaces and one-two passes and get into those areas at Man City when they cut him down.

"From our point of view, it didn't happen, the same for the Euros, we started well then we played less well against Scotland.

"When you watch Harry Kane's interview, he doesn't seem too worried about it, he's happy with the point - so am I.

"The thing is, they know what to do from here. It's not like everyone expects us to beat everyone 6-2.

"America needs to take a lot of credit for the way they played."

Neville then commented further on Foden and brought Liverpool's Trent Alexander-Arnold - who has yet to play a minute in Qatar - into the conversation.

The Manchester United legend thinks Trent's performance and creativity could have made the difference against the United States.

"I'm a bit torn because I have huge respect for Gareth for everything and what he has achieved," Neville added.

"But we have some talent sitting on the bench in Trent Alexander-Arnold and Foden, who as far as opening a game, Alexander-Arnold has some of the best deliveries you'll ever see from a full - return.

"I think those two not coming off the bench were underwhelming in the sense that you're trying to win a game. They're world-class talent."

Neville continued, "He (Southgate) worries about him defensively.

"I think other nations, Spain, Brazil, France, would probably have Trent Alexander-Arnold and Foden in the starting XI.

"I understand it a little after watching Trent Alexander-Arnold defend, but when you see a game like that when you lack creativity, when you...
