Live-action Bambi movie coming from director Sarah Polley (yes, really)

Deadline's exclusive on Polley being in talks to direct "Bambi" doesn't offer many details. It's unclear if screenwriters Geneva Robertson-Dworet and Lindsey Beer are still attached (obviously no one is hired right now amid the WGA strike). Although they have fairly brief resumes, their credits are quite disappointing (Robertson-Dworet wrote the remake of "Tomb Raider" and "Captain Marvel", while Beer directed the unreleased prequel to "Pet Sematary" and is working on a "Hello Kitty" movie).

Disney's series of live action remakes have produced some enjoyable films (I enjoyed the high camp of Bill Condon's "Beauty and the Beast" and thought that David Lowery brought a soulful touch to "Peter Pan & Wendy), but I sincerely doubt that Polley, or anyone, can match the heartache and terror of the 1942 masterpiece (which, according to David Cronenberg, is one of the scariest movies ever made).

It's still early days on nü-"Bambi", but it seems like there's a quality ceiling on these movies. I'd much rather Polley call it, but it doesn't work that way in Hollywood anymore, and it's bad for everyone but the suits and the stockholders.
