Liz Truss boosted by support for ousted Suella Braverman in Tory leadership race

Suella Braverman says she will back Liz Truss to be the new Tory leader after she was ousted in the race to succeed Boris Johnson - in a move that significantly raises the stakes.

If supporters of Ms Braverman do the same, the support will bring the Foreign Secretary closer to second-placed Penny Mordaunt and boost Ms Truss's campaign.

Sources have told The Independent that the Attorney General would lend him his vote to the Foreign Secretary in the third round of the battle to be PM.

Ms Braverman, who was knocked out of the race on Thursday after finished bottom of the second round with 27 votes, said she made the decision after holding talks with Ms Truss.

However, Ms Truss was accused of 'covert operations' in a fight desperate to stay in the race.

Ms Braverman slammed Ms Mordaunt, accusing her of failing to stand up for women in her apparent support for trans rights issues and of not being a 'genuine Brexiteer'.

Rishi Sunak and Penny Mordaunt maintained their place at the top of the Tory leadership race, taking 101 and 83 votes respectively in the Tory MP poll. .

Ms Mordaunt closed the gap between herself and favorite Rishi Sunak as well as Ms Truss in the second round on Thursday.

Prominent Brexiteer Steve Baker is expected to also back the Minister of Foreign Affairs, who came third.

“Suella has my full loyalty. What she has decided, I will support,” he said.

In addition, another leadership candidate, Tom Tugendhat, said he would abandon Channel 4's privatization policy if he became prime minister.

< p>He told LBC radio: "I don't think it's a good idea - there are many other priorities."

Mr Tugendhat also said he would not scrap the BBC license fee.
