Liz Truss 'clings to power' amid 'grotesque chaos' of Kwarteng sacking, says Starmer

Sir Keir Starmer accused Liz Truss of clinging desperate for power after sacking his Chancellor to counter the Conservative Party's fierce backlash against his disastrous growth plan.

Although Kwasi Kwarteng received the ax for his role in turmoil in Britain's economy, 'there's one more person hanging in there,' the Labor leader told supporters in Barnsley on Saturday morning.

Sir Keir said there was 'no historical precedent' for the chaos that followed the mini-budget of Mrs Truss and her former chancellor, and renewed her call for an immediate general election.

"We will no doubt hear many laughable excuses in the coming months. ins days," said Sir Keir. "After 12 years of stagnation, this is all her party has left, but even they know she can't fix the mess she's created.

"And deep down, her MPs know otherwise. They no longer have a mandate from the British people."

Under extreme pressure from her own party, Ms Truss sacked Mr Kwarteng on Friday and handed the chancellorship to Jeremy Hunt, who wasted no time in breaking away from the minister's first plan for Britain by signaling tax hikes and spending cuts.

He said: "The Britain has faced financial crises before, but the prime ministers and chancellors who have struggled with them have all acted quickly.

"When their policies collided with the rocks of reality, they have taken decisive action.

"But this batch, they not only brought down the UK economy, they also hung on by sinking the pound. They hung on as they were driving our pensions to the brink of collapse.

“They hung on as they pushed British public mortgages and bills through the roof.

“They all done this - all the pain our country faces now is theirs.
