Liz Truss pays tribute to the Queen during the passage of the Second Elizabethan Age - full speech

Liz Truss described the Queen as the "rock on which our country was built" and paid tribute to the "passage of the second Elizabethan age".

The new prime minister, dressed in black, described the death of Britain's longest reigning monarch as a "huge shock to the nation and the world".

The Queen died peacefully this afternoon at Balmoral Castle, Buckingham Palace announced.

In a solemn declaration outside Downing Street, Ms Truss described the devastation felt across the country as she passed away after a lifetime of service.

She said: 'Queen Elizabeth II was the rock on which our country was built.

"Britain is the great country it is today because of her."

The Prime Minister described the Queen as "the very spirit of Britain" and promised, "That spirit will endure."

Speaking only on the third day in office, Ms Truss recalled meeting the Queen on Tuesday when she invited her to form a government on her behalf.

The Prime Minister said: "She was a personal inspiration to me and to many Britons. Her devotion to duty is an example to us all.

"Earlier this week, at age 96, she remained determined to carry out her duties by appointing me her 15th Prime Minister."

Prince Charles is now king, having acceded to the throne immediately upon the death of his mother.

Ms Truss became the first person to greet the new monarch as King Charles III, which was confirmed by Clarence House shortly afterwards.

She said: "With the passage of the second Elizabethan era, we are ushering in a new era in the magnificent history of our great country - just as Her Majesty would have wished - by speaking the words…God save the King. "
