London Film Festival unveils lineup of immersive art and extended realities

The BFI London Film Festival has unveiled LFF Expanded's lineup, immersive art and expanded realities br (from October 5 to 16).

Programmed by Ulrich Schrauth, Immersive Art and XR curator at BFI, this year's program includes interactive virtual reality, screen installations, augmented reality, mixed reality, immersive audio experience and live performances. The program will take place in several locations on the South Bank of London.

The highlight of the program is the festival-commissioned world premiere of Guy's "Haunted Hotel" Maddin: A Melodrama in Augmented Reality,” which promises to transport audiences to a surreal paper world, created from a selection of newspaper clippings from Maddin's personal archive, set to a soundscape by composer Magnus Fiennes. /p>

Schrauth describes the work as "invites the audience to explore a vibrant tableau of desire, deceit and death."

Schrauth said, "This year's program examines relevant issues of our time from an extremely diverse range of perspectives and art forms."

Maddin said, "I've long thought collage is good for keeping my eye sharp for film shoots. After all, the cutter and gluer of paper things arranges these things in a frame, just like a director - pure staging! But making collages in augmented reality is really a headache, another experience completely, with its multiple layers of interest yearning to draw the viewer ever inward, floating non-sequences that suggest causal connections and hide vile secrets, all creating a thick atmosphere with unbridled - lustful urges , murderous, stupid!"

BFI London Film Festival Director Tricia Tuttle said: "We are electrified by the quality of the work in progress for immersive and expanded reality platforms. It is a space where the film industry meets the creative storytelling worlds of art, dance, music, performance and digital design, a space that encourages experimentation, cross-pollination and collaboration."

This is LFF Expanded's third year at the festival and the 2022 edition features 20 projects from 17 country.
