Drivers in a small French village say they feel sick because of the strange wavy lines on the roads.

Baune's roads are lined with scribbles in an effort to deter speeding cars and prevent dangerous driving - but it's gone viral for all the wrong reasons. Some locals first thought the new road markings were an abstract art project.

However, authorities were quick to clarify that the zigzag lines were intended to slow down drivers in a 30 km/h (19 mph) zone. It is designed to make the road more confusing for drivers, prompting them to slow down. The doodles were painted on stretches of road leading to a T-junction in the village.

Mayor Audrey Revereault says the markings have worked as intended, with the number of cars stopped for driving over the speed limit dropping significantly since they were introduced in July. Ms Revereault said officials had hoped the markings would "create visual disruption" and slow down drivers.

Jean-Charles Prono, mayor of Loire-Authion, a group of seven villages that includes Baune, said traffic speeds in the village sometimes reached 50 km/h, causing huge safety concerns among residents . He added: “It is a town of 1,700 inhabitants which is crossed by three main departmental roads and precisely in this area there are two. "People drive fast and it's hard to get them to slow down and have road signs that work."

He added that the aim was to "make it difficult to read the landscape". However, many residents were divided on the lines. Many have posted on the local Facebook page “Ca Bouge sur Bauné” to share their views.
