Lucy Liu's Weird World Character Was Originally Very Different From The Final Iteration [Exclusive]

According to Conli, Callisto originally had a very different type of characterization - one that Liu seemed to blend in with in the early days. As Conli told /Film:

"In the beginning, she was a lot more like a Jaeger-type character. We were like, 'Oh my God, that's too...', 'Look, we're thinking about changing this character.' And she said, "Well, let's see what it is", because she really wanted to embrace this character.

“We went back to her twice because we wanted to work with her so badly. She totally embraced that. I mean, she's an incredibly subtle character, Callisto. She's also a leader."< /p>

You can see glimpses of what she was in some of Callisto's comments, but it seems like two strident characters like that would have been too much. Instead, Callisto is very clear about what she wants and isn't shy about letting anyone know when she doesn't agree - sometimes with a bit of force. However, when it's clear she's wrong, she's quick to admit it and change her mind, even though she'll be the one to bear the brunt of the repercussions.

Interestingly, in Greek and Roman mythology, the nymph Callisto - who served the hunter goddess Artemis - was transformed into a bear after an encounter with Zeus and placed in the sky as the constellation of the Big bear. The bear seems to be a big part of this Callisto's personality. She is powerful, physically imposing and protective of her young (her people).
