Luton's home opener with Burnley postponed due to pitch upgrade

Luton's home Premier League opener with Burnley has been postponed.

The match - the Hatters' first ever Premier League game at Kenilworth Road - was due to take place on August 19.

But, with the stadium in need of a dramatic £10million upgrade to make it ready for top-flight football, the Clarets' visit is cut short as Luton cannot guarantee no work will be done. will impact the game in the short term.

Luton Managing Director Gary Sweet said: "The joint decision to delay this fitting is unfortunate, especially given the incredible progress that continues to be made on our construction work.

"Our current schedule is indeed on schedule, but there are no additional contingencies and therefore cannot give an absolute guarantee at this stage that a problem beyond our control, however minor -he would not force an additional postponement down the line and inconveniencing the supporters of both clubs.

“While this news is disappointing, it will make the game day experience even more enjoyable for fans when they can return.

"We would like to thank the Premier League and Burnley for their help in making this practical decision."

The Hatters, who beat Coventry on penalties in the Championship play-off final, open their campaign at Brighton on August 12.

A Premier League statement read: "The Premier League game between Luton Town and Burnley which was scheduled to take place on Saturday August 19 will now be postponed.

"Luton Town have been unable to offer the League and Burnley a guarantee that the ongoing works on Kenilworth Road will not impact the scheduling of this match at such late notice to the fans."

Meanwhile, Manchester City's game against Brentford, scheduled for December 23, has been postponed due to City's involvement in the Club World Cup.
