A man is fighting for his life after falling from the roof of an old church while protesting the amount of benefits he is receiving.

Joseph McAteer, 36, shouted 'how am I going to live on £29 a month?' before plunging 15 meters from the rooftop in Preston, Lancashire.

He remains on life support at the Royal Preston Hospital and has not yet regained consciousness.

His father, Joseph McAteer Sr, said he ran into his son on the day of the horrific incident on August 16 and said he appeared frustrated following a signing at the center for the employment.

An hour later, Mr McAteer Sr, 65, walked past a police cordon near the former Fishergate Baptist Church, now Bistrot Pierre, as he was returning home at around 5:20 p.m. realizing that his son Joseph was on the roof above.

The terrified dad told the Mirror: 'He was at his wit's end. He was screaming at me, 'How am I going to live on £29 a month?'

"I said 'get down, Joseph, or you'll kill yourself.'"
