A pastor who is in a coma after eating a deadly mushroom dish is 'likely' to wake up and may have vital information behind the poisoned meal, according to reports.

Ian Wilkinson is the sole survivor of a poisoned beef Wellington dinner disaster that took place at the home of Erin Patterson in Leongatha, Australia on July 29.

He reportedly attended the meal to help facilitate a reconciliation between Erin and her ex-husband Simon Patterson, who reportedly called it quits at the last minute.

The pastor was joined by his wife Heather and sister Gail and her husband Don Patterson, all of whom sadly passed away after consuming the dish. It is now believed that Ian needs a liver transplant and may have suffered severe kidney damage.

According to one source, he only survived because he was quickly transported to a hospital specializing in the treatment of poisonings. Mr Wilkinson is expected to need an urgent liver transplant and has also likely suffered significant kidney damage. He is still being treated at Austin Hospital in Melbourne.

The source told Daily Mail Australia: "I suspect he's going to be fine because if they thought he was so sick and they just needed the best intensive care, I think "He'd be at the Alfred. He's probably going for a transplant. There's a chance he's had one before, but no one will tell you because it could identify the donor. He added that organ transplants are generally not offered unless there is certainty that the patient will wake up. He continued, "You don't want to lose one. You're not going to give one to someone who's likely not to."

Erin Patterson prepared the dish which varied from two different mushrooms, which she had also eaten herself. In a recent statement, she said she allowed guests to choose their own plates before grabbing the last one. The mum revealed she was given 'liver-protective medication' after suffering stomach pain and diarrhoea.
