A man who killed his girlfriend's toddler son by smashing his head into the floor of his van has been jailed for life.

Judges at the Singapore High Court have heard how defendant Mohamed Aliff Mohamed Yusoff, 29, committed the despicable act after rowing with his girlfriend, and will now be caned.

Yusoff - who will also be caned 15 times after the August 11 hearing - had claimed the baby fell from his arms in November 2019.

But in an earlier hearing, the court heard that Yusoff had smashed the nine-month-old baby's head on the wooden floor of his vehicle at least twice.

The court heard how the heinous crime happened in a parking lot in Yishun while the baby - Izz Fayyaz Zayani Ahmad - was in his care.

Yusoff allegedly carried out the fatal attack just hours after he argued with his girlfriend, Nadiah Abdul Jalil.

The infant's cause of death was given as blunt trauma.
