A couple have been arrested after a man was sucked into a sinkhole at a party at their home.

The tragedy unfolded in Karmi Yosef, about 40 km from Tel Aviv in Israel, on Thursday.

A second person was also pulled into the sinkhole, but managed to escape, according to firefighters.

Police say the man and woman are charged with causing the death by negligence.

The 30-year-old man's body has been found after an extensive search, authorities said.

It is understood that around 50 people attended the party, where some filmed objects being sucked into the center of the pool.

Detectives said the arrested couple were placed under "restrictive house arrest conditions" after being taken into police custody following the incident.

Witness: "The water level suddenly began to drop and a hole opened up, creating a vortex that dragged two people inside."

Meanwhile, lifeguard Aviv Bublil told the Ynet news site that she yelled at people to get out of the pool around 2 p.m., but they did not follow her instructions.

She suspected that maybe they thought it was a game and didn't realize they were in danger.
