Merson backs 'struggling' Tottenham star to 'get back to his best', says CL loss 'could help them'

Paul Merson has backed Son Heung-Min to 'get back to his best' for Tottenham Hotspur amid their disappointing start to the 2022/23 campaign.

Son has proven to be a sensational signing for Spurs. He has established a brilliant collaboration with Harry Kane.

The South Korean international was one of the best performers in the Premier League last season as he shared the Golden Boot with Liverpool's Mohamed Salah.

Five Prem summer signings made for a total of £66m that currently look a little wasteful

After finishing fourth last season, Spurs are set to start this season under Antonio Conte.

They now have more options to choose from upfront with the addition of Richarlison and Dejan Kulusevski to their squad.

Tottenham got off to an unbeaten start in the Premier League, but Son was out of form. He has only been involved in one goal in eight appearances in all competitions.

The forward struggled again in midweek as Tottenham were beaten 2-0 by Sporting Lisbon in the Champions League group stage. Glenn Hoddle claimed after the game that Son had a "scorching" night:

"He had another torrid game," Hoddle said.

"I love him to pieces and he's a fabulous player but he's struggling.

"As the ball comes towards him, he worries about his first touch, whereas when you're in sync and confident you don't have to worry about it, you think about what you'll do next." < /p>

Tottenham are back in action on Saturday night as they host Leicester City.

Merson claimed Spurs were "not playing well" but he backed them to beat Brendan Rodgers' side 3-0.

The former Arsenal player also suggested that Son would 'get back to his best' as the 'cream always rises to the top':

"Tottenham are not playing well at the moment, let's be honest. The game against Sporting in the UEFA Champions League was bad for them, but in my opinion it could help them in the long run," Merson wrote for < em>Sportskeeda.

"At the start of the Premier League season I felt like the results were disappearing, which obviously wouldn't after what happened in Europe in midweek.

"Having said that, I still want them to bounce back and beat Leicester City this weekend.

"The Foxes are everywhere and it seems to me that their players aren't working for each other, which is a worrying sign for Brendan Rodgers.

"They have good players, but it's not working for them at the moment.

"Son Heung-min's form has been a concern, but I want him to get back to his best.

"Cream always rises to the top, which is why I think Antonio Conte needs to keep kicking it off every week."
