The mega-rich Rishi Sunak made a presentation to conservative loyalists wearing worn shoes with a hole in the sole, while the finishing touches are applied to the swimming pool of his luxury home.

The former chancellor, who has denied his wealth means he's out of touch, was caught with the worn shoe earlier this week.

This is in stark contrast to last month, when he wore Prada loafers, estimated at around £470, during a visit to a building site.

Mr. Sunak has repeatedly hit back at comments about her expensive outfit, including from Culture Secretary Nadine Dorries, who praised rival Liz Truss for wearing £4.50 earrings.

It has raised questions about whether he is dressing deliberately as the race for prime minister enters its final days.

Prof Paul Baines, an expert in political marketing from the University of Leicester, said: 'Displaying wealth is unseemly in today's environment.

"It's definitely old fashioned to wear expensive clothes when everyone's in pain, and I think he admitted that."

Professor Baines, a Tory adviser, added that Ms Truss could afford to dress 'much more lavishly' - but chose not to.
