Mirror Concert Tragedy: Hong Kong police make arrests

Hong Kong police made a series of arrests early Friday morning in connection with the injuries serious events in July when a large LED screen fell on the stage where the local canto-pop group Mirror was performing.

Media sources in Hong Kong said police raided the homes of several people from 6:30 a.m. local time and arrested five – four men and one woman. All five would be related to Engineering Impact or its subcontractor Hip Hing Loong Stage Engineering.

According to the South China Morning Post, they are detained for fraud or causing an object to fall from a height .

The incident happened on July 28 in the concert hall of the Hong Kong Coliseum in front of 20 000 fans.

Dancers Mo Li Kai-yin and Chang Tsz-fung were injured. As Chang was released the next day, Li suffered serious and possibly lasting injuries. He is currently hospitalized.

The Hong Kong government has launched multiple investigations into the incident. One revealed in preliminary findings in August that the weight of the screen was miscalculated. He also reported using a substandard cable and an improperly installed rope guard.

Fraud charges, which carry a potential jail term of 14 years, could be enforced because investigations are supposed to show that the weight of the screen was 520 pounds, when in fact it should have been 520 kilograms. One kilogram equals 2.2 pounds.

Police and government spokespersons have yet to comment on the arrests.
