Two young boys have died while swimming in a lake in Germany, it has been reported.

The brothers, aged seven and nine, were pulled from a lake near Aachen, near the Belgian and Dutch borders, on Thursday evening after being reported missing by their parents hours earlier , reported the local press.

Their bodies were later found in the water of the Rurberg natural outdoor pool in North Rhine-Westphalia.

Rescuers desperately tried to revive their lifeless bodies at the scene, before they were airlifted to Aachen University Hospital and a children's hospital in Cologne, reports the German news site WLZ.

They were later pronounced dead in hospital.

A spokeswoman said it could be a form of negligence, but stressed, "We're not focusing on anyone in particular, we're just doing our job."
