Thousands of struggling families will be able to get help paying for food this Christmas - but more than 20 councils have now dropped out of the scheme.

The government's Holiday Activity and Food (HAF) scheme continues this year, under which councils receive funding to help provide meals and activities for children.

The program is open to school-aged children from reception to grade 11 who receive free school meals linked to benefits.

And it came after Manchester United and England footballer Marcus Rashford campaigned tirelessly for vouchers and cash for families with children benefiting from gn free school meals during the pandemic.
