Witch wizards are said to be behind the barbaric murder of over 100 vultures in South Africa's most notorious safari park, slaughtering them for use in black magic potions.

A buffalo was first poisoned and when the vultures started circling it in Kruger National Park, it wasn't long before they flew out to feast on the stricken beast .

As the scavengers began to clean up the carcass, the powerful poison penetrated the birds' bodies, and then they began to crumble en masse, dying in agony around the half-eaten buffalo.

Even a lone hyena that had settled in for its share of the prey was found dead among the huge pile of vultures strewn around the buffalo after wolfing down the poisonous meat.

The illegal trade in vulture body parts, especially the heads, viciously curved beaks and talons known as "muti", turns them into potions and threatens their existence.

Patrolling Rangers discovered the appalling mass poisoning near the main gate of Punda Maria on Thursday and rescued 20 very sick vultures near a fence bordering a local village.

They were rushed in a ranger station wagon to a nearby rehabilitation center for emergency treatment to save them by the Endangered Wildlife Trust.

Two similar poisonings occurred at the Kruger last year and at the same time as the latest mass poisoning another 50 vultures were poisoned over the Botswana border at Chobe.

SANParks Acting Chief Inspector Hapiloe Sello said: "This wrongdoing highlights once again the ever-present danger of wildlife poisoning by unscrupulous people.

"The scene has been cordoned off for further investigation and the carcasses have been burned to ensure there is no further poisoning and we have 20 birds still alive.

"Initial indications are that the carcasses were removed for their body parts and SANParks can confirm that we have referred this matter to the police for further investigation.
