Nearly a thousand Russian soldiers were killed in the deadliest day of fighting since the start of the war in Ukraine, officials in Kyiv say.

The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine made the statement on Monday after revealing that 71,200 of Vladimir Putin's soldiers are believed to have died since the start of the invasion in February.

A total of 950 of them were killed on Sunday alone, they said, as Volodymyr Zelensky's forces continued to advance towards the key southern city of Kherson.

The latest count puts the number of Russian soldiers killed by Ukrainian forces in October at 12,730, an average of 400 days.
