New trailer for the 4K restoration of Bertolucci's classic "The Conformist"

The Conformist 4K Trailer

Kino Lorber has unveiled a brand new 4K restoration trailer for the classic 1970 Italian fascism film The Conformist, directed by iconic director Bernardo Bertolucci. The film originally opened 51 years ago in US theaters, after screening at the New York Film Festival. Set in Mussolini's Italy in the 1930s, the film follows a willful Italian who becomes a fascist lackey and travels to Paris to organize the assassination of his former teacher, now a leftist political dissident. The film stars Jean-Louis Trintignant, with Stefania Sandrelli, Gastone Moschin, Dominique Sanda, Pierre Clémenti. 4K restoration by the Cineteca di Bologna in collaboration with Minerva Pictures, fully supervised by the Fondazione Bernardo Bertolucci, at the L'Immagine Ritrovata laboratory, from the original camera negative. Critics said it was a "dazzling film" with "the most arresting, baroque imagery you'll ever see", complete with an impressive Art Deco production design. As always, these beloved classics have never been so properly restored to pristine 4K, and if you can see this on the big screen near you, don't miss this opportunity.

Here is the new 4K restoration trailer (+ poster) for The Conformist by Bernardo Bertolucci, from YouTube:

"Transports you to a world of pure style… As intriguing as the reconstruction of one thwarted historical movement is - the late 1930s - it is even more evocative of another, the late 1960s and the early 1970s, when cinema seemed to be entering a period of decadence that was also a second youth.'" –A.O. Scott from The New York Times

The Conformist Poster of 1970

In Mussolini's Italy, actor Jean-Louis Trintignant plays the role of the repressed Marcello Clerici, who tries to erase the memories of a homosexual episode of youth - and a murder - joined fascists in a desperate attempt to integrate. As a reluctant Judas heads for his personal Gethsemane (the assassination of his leftist mentor), he returns to a dance party for the blind; an insane asylum in a stadium; and his wife Stefania Sandrelli and her lover Dominique Sanda dance the tango in a working-class room. But these are just a few of the anthology pieces in this political thriller, others including Trintignant's honeymoon as a couple with Sandrelli in a train compartment as the sun sets outside the window; a bimbo lying on the desk of a fascist civil servant, seen in the recesses of his cavernous office; the hands of a murder victim leaving bloody trails on a limo parked in a wintery forest. Bernardo Bertolucci's masterpiece, adapted from Alberto Moravia's novel, sports an authentic Art Deco look created by production designer Ferdinando Scarfiotti, a score by the great Georges Delerue and jaw-dropping color cinematography by maestro Vittorio Storaro .

The Conformist, also known as Il Conformista in Italian, is written and directed by legendary Italian filmmaker Bernardo Bertolucci, his fourth feature film to time, made just two years before making Dernier Tango à Paris. It is based on the Italian novel of the same name written by Alberto Moravia. The film first premiered at the Berlin Film Festival in 1970, before also showing at the 8th New York Film Festival later that year, in US theaters in early 1971. The restoration 4K of The Conformist opens in select US. cinemas (from Film Forum in New York) on January 6, 2023. For more information, visit the KL website.
