Two of the most iconic men in Hong Kong cinema, Tony Leung and Andy Lau, face off in this jaw-dropping thriller that revitalized the city-state's film industry in the 21st century, launched a successful franchise and inspired Martin Scorsese's The Departed. The montage is diabolical in its simplicity: two undercover moles - a policeman (Leung) tasked with infiltrating a ruthless triad by posing as a gangster, and a gangster who becomes a policeman in order to serve as a spy for the underworld - reunite locked in a deadly game of cat and mouse, each racing against time to unmask the other. As shifting loyalties, dark moral compromises and deadly betrayals pile up, Infernal Affairs raises haunting questions about what it means to live a double life, lost in a maze of conflicting identities and allegiances. -Janus Films

Infernal Affairs (2002), Infernal Affairs II (2003) and Infernal Affairs IIII (2003) are all co-directed by Hong Kong filmmakers Andrew Lau and Alan Mak, directors of many, many other Hong Kong action films before, including directing Initial D and Confession of Pain > together before they each went their own way to directing solo films. Scripts are also co-written by Alan Mak and Felix Chong for all three films. The films took years to first appear in the United States, only opening in 2004 after their first Hong Kong premiere in 2002/2003. The new 4K restorations of the Infernal Affairs trilogy will debut in select theaters (Lincoln Center in New York) on September 16, 2022. They will be released on Criterion Collection Blu-ray later this year.
